70 Years Later, 'Secret Lovers' Still Wed (AP). AP - When 19-year-old Ron Ramey fell in love with 14-year-old Marcella, doubters said it would never last — they were just too far apart in age. Why "application server" ?. Why/when do we need an application server? Can't we just have a database server and create application using, let's say, Microsoft Visual Interdev? [Ask Tom MOST RECENT ARTICLES] While this is not a new question per se, it does raise some interesting issues.  One of the reasons cited by Tom is a valid one, with an application server, you do not have to deploy clients to the desktop.  This means fewer machines to manage and the ability to better control versions and application capability.  One of the other things it brings, if you build it correctly, is the ability to run an application on any platform.  This is becoming crucial anymore for true distributed computing.  It is not enough anymore to design an application that only runs on Windows or only runs on UNIX.  True the processing and crunching my be limited on the back end, but the ability of the user to access, input and retrieve data can no longer be limited to a single platform or operating system, or even computing device. Which means that when applications are built, there has to be a lot more thought put into them than ever in the past. 7:48:10 AM    comment []
