Patriot Act renewal blocked in Senate (Reuters). Reuters - A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, demanding increased protection of civil liberties, defied President George W. Bush on Friday and blocked legislation to renew the USA Patriot Act, a centerpiece of his war on terrorism. [Yahoo! News: Top Stories]

Right thinking conservatives everywhere will decry this day as the day the United States got soft on terrorism and will point to it for all the evils that are visited upon the country, right or wrong, for generations to come.

And the rest of us will breath a sigh of relief that a bad law is gone.  The Patriot Act, with its noble name, is nothing less than a complete and utter erosion of every liberty that every citizen of the United States takes for granted.

The United States, in its rush to secure the homeland, rammed through the Patriot Act, loaded with all kinds of things that before that point had been rejected on their merits because they were in violation of various aspects of the Constitution and other little trivial things like that.

It can be argued that there are things in Patriot and Patriot II that should continue to be enforced and are good things.  This gives everyone the chance to step back and evaluate the law and make the changes to it so that the good that needs to be kept can be, without the bad, that should rightly be tossed.
