U.S. Says It's Making Progress on Bird Flu (AP). AP - The U.S. is making fast progress in preparations for a bird flu pandemic, including measures to close down schools and quarantine the sick, but vaccine supplies remain inadequate, health officials said Sunday. [Yahoo! News: U.S. National]

Bird flu is going to be the topic du jour for the next couple of months, so I guess we should get used to it being in the news, but this is something that really bothers me.

On the first line of this story, it is reported that the US is making progress, including having measures to close down schools.  If there is an outbreak, there are much more fundamental issues that have to be addresses.  First, what is the plan to get medical attention to all of these quarantined people.  This flu, by all reports, causes multiple internal failures that require medical support beyond chicken soup.  How is this going to be handled.

One thing that has to be addressed is the support of systems where the staffing levels are impacted either because the employees are sick or members of their family are sick and they are quarantined or have to be away to take care of them.

This is not a simple issue and there is not any discussion of how this will be addressed, especially if we are talking about hospitalizing (or sheltering) thousands of people.
