I've been writing a series of Articles for my local newspaper called "Speeches I Wish My President Had Given." The latest speech is on Integrating the military, and is written from the perspective of the president looking forward just a few months after 9/11 and thinking through with the American public how essential it is that we fully integrate the armed services to bring to bear all our resources.
It is hard for me to reconcile so many aspects of this war, not least of which is the fact that some of the people we need most are being drummed out of the service for reasons that are senseless, baseless and known to be false.
This leads me to a discussion I do want to start in this blog: what is underneath the fervent opposition to same-sex marriage, an integrated military and 14th amendment protection for queer citizens? It is not the Bible; the Bible is being used (and manipulated) to justify a prior-existing hatred. It may be just the "ick" factor, but I suspect there is more to it, and I will be following up with more on this topic as I sort through the issue in my own mind.
You are invited, as always to comment and to discuss.
