In an attempt to remove archaic sodomy and adultery laws from the books in Massachusetts, a number of honorable law makers have introduced An Act Relative to Archaic Crimes which would, among other things, remove the laws against adultery, fornication, sodomy and the advertisement of abortion. The law reduces the penalty for performing a sexual act on an animal from 20 years in prison to 2 1/2 years and/or a $5,000 fine.
This last bit has been picked up by those who believe that same-sex marriage will lead to bestiality such as this article on LifeSite which headlines "First Comes Gay Marriage then Comes Bestiality in Massachusetts."
Now, adjusting or eliminating draconian, obsolete and possibly unconstitutional laws is important, and perhaps an act of legislative courage, but the timing on this particular proposal (in the face of the impending citizens petition to eliminate same-sex marriage in the Commonwealth) is, at best, ill-timed.
It is one thing to stand up for what is right, it is quite another to load your enemies' gun and put it to your own head. |
