Hope you like apples

Four a day keeps the doctor away, apparently.

This is a little bit old, but it made an impression on me. Some Australian researchers hypothesize that eating certain fruits and vegetables regularly can help to control asthma.

Study head and research fellow Lisa Wood says: "Our initial data shows that people with asthma have lower blood levels of carotenoids than the general population". She says carotenoids are important antioxidants found in plants, where they create red, yellow or orange hues.

One type,, lycopene, is commonly found in tomatoes, and levels in the body can be boosted by drinking tomato juice.

Dr Wood also says several large population studies had recently suggested that eating apples may protect against asthma. "We're getting people to eat four a day."

I love apples, and I think they help my general health, but two a day is my limit.

Stay upwind from the traffic

Another study suggests a connection between traffic and asthma.

This one notes that being on the wrong side of a pollution source can add to problems:

Wind patterns were important. Living downwind of a major road increased exposure to traffic pollutants.
