Vitamins and asthma

A new study in a new journal indicates Vitamin E might have help prevent asthma, but not reduce symptoms.

In a "Pulmonary Perspective" on "Diet and Asthma" in the first issue for October 2004 of the American Thoracic Society's peer-reviewed American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, researchers point out that in longitudinal and clinical studies only vitamin E has been shown to have a protective effect against asthma; yet, even that vitamin does not generate any real effect on asthma control.

Moreover, the authors note that, to date, no individual nutrients alone or in combination have been shown to produce a major impact on either the severity or the incidence of clinical asthma. According to the investigators, the vitamins most extensively investigated for their effect on asthma are vitamins C, E, and vitamin A/beta carotene.

I know for certain that diet has a huge effect on my asthma; certain foods will trigger an attack, so I avoid them. I also think there are foods that help. I don't think much of these studies that isolate vitamins from actual food sources. I know that's important for scientific studies, but eating a vitamin isn't the same as eating a whole food that contains those vitamins.

UK reduces discrimination against asthmatics

Asthma will no longer be an obstacle for young British citizens who would like to be police officers or firefighters thanks to an amended anti-discrimination law.

The act will, for the first time, allow people with asthma to apply to become police officers and firefighters - professions that have in the past been prohibited to those with the condition because of the physical demands they may entail. All applications must now be considered on their own merits.

Kiss My Asthma would like to welcome Britain to the 21st century.
