Good Idea, Poor Execution
So first, let's give CBS Evening News credit. The idea to compare and contrast the Bush and Kerry plans on specific issues by showing how the policies might work in real people's lives, a segment called "What Does it Mean to You?", is a good one. This trend in coverage is one way to bring the news home, so to speak. But there are various glitches between concept and execution. Working with hypotheticals is always difficult, but that is the least of it. I knew I wasn't liking what CBS was doing just seconds into the first segment I caught, and my view hasn't changed after viewing subsequent reports: the pieces are weakly reported and wdo not always compare policy proposals point-by-point. Most annoying is the rush to opinion that permeates the segments. I was thinking of dissecting one, and will probably do so later for the classroom. But in the meantime, FAIR, the progressive media watchdog, beat me to it. The group has examined the first installment, which focused on the school voucher debate, and has decided that the network "presented a slanted view on a very controversial topic."
