Sorry Past has Lessons for Today
The New York Times has a page one article about the recent series the Lexington Herald-Leader (KY)ran to expose the paper's refusal to cover the civils rights movement in the 1950's and 1960's. Editors at the Kentucky paper went out of their way to avoid covering the peaceful counter sit-ins and other acts of civil disobedience that took place right in front of them. Better yet, check out the Lexington Herald's articles on its sorry past. Many newspaper editors in the south ignored or belittled the civil rights movement. The articles and commentary about them are provide insight into how mainstream journalism often ignores ( and impedes) important social movements and change. Some of the same tendencies can be found in coverage of the anti-war in Iraq movement.
