About this blogger
I'm a journalism scholar and professor ( Central Connecticut State University) with more than 25 years of experience writing for newspapers and magazines, most recently as an Op-ed columnist for the Hartford Courant. My doctoral research focused on how people negotiate news in everyday life. I am particularly interested in the interplay of journalism, everyday life, and politics: how people come to pay attention to and understand the important issues of the day. I'll share some of the work as I discuss aspects of press performance. The news media is a powerful institution that does not get enough focus as a major influence on popular reality. My goal is not critique for the sake of critique; in critiquing coverage, and sometimes pointing to the good, I hope to offer constructive comment on what news media and do better-- and what news readers, viewers, and listeners should deamnd.
