Expanding the Medicare inpatient transfer policy, as CMS proposes, could reduce hospital payments by $880 mln in FY '06 alone. If CMS follows through with its proposal, nearly 230 DRGs would be subject to reduced payment whenever patients are transferred to post-accute care after a brief general hospital stay.
