All or Nothing   (on business)    (selected articles in bizdrivenlife compiled)

One of the many things an entrepreneur will be facing is the concept of 'stretch' goals.  Whether this concept is imposed upon him by his partners, suppliers, principal, or himself, there will always be the attempt to grow faster than normal.  After all, growth is almost the mantra of business, not because  necessarily you might want to manage a bigger business, but sometimes the spectre that if you don't grow, you will be eaten up or cease being competitive is so strong in various markets.

Having stretch goals invariably means you have to talk to your employees and associates, and convince them to sell, or accomplish things that are 20, 30 or 50% more than the same period last year.  Some will relish the challenge, some will not say much but evidently, you can sense that they are not convinced they can do it, and this is where you would have a deadbeat, which is dangerous for the business.

This means that in the person's words, he is supportive of these stretch goals, but inside, he knows he is not going to make it, and has even quit trying.  Without you knowing it, you have already failed even before you have started.

Apparently, many people have this kind of all or nothing thinking.  We say that aim for the stars, aim high, because if you don't hit it, you will still end up high.  However, for some people, its either you have a good chance or not at all.  We read about winners who don't quit, who continue to keep playing their best even when they are behind.  You also see players who stop doing their best when they feel their chances of winning is really slim.  Have you seen basketball players who play warily with still 6 minutes to go just because they are 10 points behind?

At the end, you really want to choose people who not only give their best when you are winning, but doesn't quit doing their best even when the odds are clearly against them.  There are people who given a 100,000 dollar sales goal which they deemed realistic will give their all, but given a 130,000 dollar sales goal which they deemed not possible will end up only giving half hearted efforts.

So at the end, you ask yourself, and your team , " do we have the heart that keeps going even when the going gets tough?"
