Gartner says Open Source Stifles Innovation  (tidbits)   (selected articles in bizdrivenlife compiled)

The open source movement could have a damaging impact on software innovation, according to a prominent market analyst.

Bob Hayward, senior vice president and chief research officer, Gartner Research Asia-Pacific, said that software developers could be discouraged from creating new software because of the multitude of open source software available for free. This is further driven by major vendors that are making their software available as open source .

I do agree.  I guess it is deja vu all over again.  There was a time when IBM would bundle the software just to sell their big iron.  Then EDS, Microsoft, and others came in and tries to come in and says that software is valuable, and hardware is not.... Now hardware is cheap, and software is getting cheaper and cheaper....  Yes, who would want to develop software if there is available open source, or your competitor is giving it for free?
