The Daily Hopper Explained

I take the time to do this today because the week has been bereft of any great revelations. I suppose most things are bouncing around below the surface waiting to slam together the next good idea.

The Daily Hopper refers to those lotto/bingo machines filled with bouncing balls with numbers. I think of the the mind, especially at the subconscious levels, in just this way. Ideas, facts, tangents, random observations...all this stuff drops into the hopper, and goes to work bouncing around. The difference between the lotto/bingo machines and the mind is that in the mind the balls slam together to make new numbers, over and over again. Of course, the ball that comes out of the chute at the top is the number of the moment, and correspondingly, in our analogy, there is the new idea. So what's bouncing around down there just now?

1) As I work on a screenplay idea related to infidelity, I am reminded again at how devastating infidelity is, how life-changing for all involved. A consistent picture in scripture is God roaming the earth to find a single faithful man. Sad that more and more women are having to do the same thing. (and vice versa.)

2) Working on the screenplay, The Arthur Cycle, and Hunting Grace (second novel) all at the same time, my respect for the art of storytelling rising by the day, which I suppose, is why there are so many bad ones out there. Thanks again, Act One...

3) Reading through Image Magazine this week, having just gotten my first hardcopy issue. A publication on art and faith I've known about for years...wow...what a great looking magazine, with content deep and wide. (Oh, great...now there's another thing I have to read...)

4) Here's another spiritually minded publication you might want to check out: Wineskins. This is a magazine published online by some forward thinking people from the Churches of Christ. (Mike Cope, Rubel Shelley, Larry Bridgesmith, Greg Taylor, and others.) Great look, great content, great people. Worth a look.

5) In a world where things seem to be generally splitting apart, here's some good news: two churches of different denominations merging. Nearly 100 years ago, Churches of Christ and Christian Churces split from the same movement over the issue of whether instruments are acceptable to God in worship. Here are two churches--Northwest Church of Christ (my home congregation) and Shoreline Christian Church--that have decided that issue isn't worth being divided over. Tomorrow is the first day of these churchs' new life together. Awesome...

6) Started working out again this week (If you can call it that). They say it gives you more energy...oh, boy...I'm waiting for that surplus to kick in.

7) Daniel's school. Last spring, when it came time to get Daniel registered in high school, the Seattle School District didn't get our paperwork. The assigned him to a high school in Timbuktu, which of course, we balked at. Without going into details, enough to say that Daniel is at #6 on the waiting list to get into Roosevelt High School. Signs look good he'll get in, after two days of schook, the phone hasn't rung yet. If it doesn't, it's him and me doing the home school thing for the year. Between the two of us, we'd have a great time, but we're both hoping for school life as usual.

More on what's in the Hopper later...
