Leaving Ruin in Canada

Steve Waldschmidt's design for the play
...see Texas?

Notes from Vancouver, B.C. and the current run of Leaving Ruin at Pacific Theatre.

When I go on the road, I'm never quite sure what to expect...from staffers at the host venue, from audiences, from the performances themselves. Happy to report that the experience with Ron Reed and Pacific Theatre has been great so far. Aside from a brief (and expensive) delay at the border, a couple of forgotten items (where's my music?), and the fact that the major prop of the play broke in my hands during the climactic moment of Saturday night's performance (nothing a little metal epoxy won't fix), things went without a hitch. Thanks to Steve for the great set, and to Erin, my stage manager, and to Rebecca and Gillian and the rest of the Pacific Theatre staff, for making the first weekend so successful. (We even sold all the books we had...)

And I have to put in brief plug for Waymon and Penny and A Harborview Retreat, the bed and breakfast providing me lodging while I'm there. It's been a great place to write this past week--comfortable, quiet, and plenty of coffee. Their hospitality is a true gift, and the breakfasts are to die for.

I missed the presidential debates, missed Joan of Arcadia, but did manage to finish the project for Act One: Writing for Hollywood--tentatively titled The Morgan Rebuild and have launched into the rewrite for Arthur: The Hunt, which is going to be less extensive than I had first imagined. Still waiting on news from the Jean Cocteau Repertory Company about Arthur: The Begetting...
