"Firefly"

Any other "Firefly" fans out there?

In LA this summer, I came across "Firefly," the old TV series by Joss Wheden. My friend Sean is a great fan of "Firefly" and I sat in on a couple of episodes. Sean is a very smart man who taste runs fairly close to mine, so when he said he liked this thing, I thought, "Might as well take a look." This space adventure / western hybrid set 500 years in the future is a delight. From the comically cynical, no-hope captain who simply wants to get to the next job, to the "companion" (uptown word for prostitute) who is along on the ship for the respect she brings her crew as they hop from world to world (yep, respect--that's not a typo) to the slightly dingy, untrained, but brilliant ship's mechanic, the characters of "Firefly" turn convention on its head, and though I'm sure the series lost points with lots of religious people (if they even saw it), I find its moral universe compelling and appropriately difficult to navigate.

Just a heads up to check it out if you get the chance. Watch for the film coming in April 2005. They're calling it "Serenity," which is the name of the ship. Can't wait...

How PG-13 Became A Favorite Rating [ArtsJournal - Media]

I didn't know this was how the PG-13 thing came about. Says alot about how films are made these days, and the kinds of hoops filmmakers have to jump through to get kids to the movies.

In Hollywood, teens have power...
