The Smiths have been hearing from the Village Homes Association since a fire burned down part of their house in 1986. When their house was not immediately restored, the association began sending letters saying the Smiths were violating the Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&Rs).

Williams endured the secondhand smoke for years. But after his neighbor moved, he and the other owners of the 12-unit Mendham, N.J., complex amended the condo's bylaws to ban smoking.
