On the University of Michigan campus, one venerable building is beginning its second century decked out in a trendy new color. Green. Sunflower seed hull cabinets, bamboo floors, solar panels and composting toilets are among the green -- meaning environmentally friendly and energy-efficient -- components of the recently renovated Dana Building, home to the School of Natural Resources and Environment. [Schools] St. Louis University joins the 'green' building trend

Builders of St. Louis University's future research building near the corner of Grand Boulevard and Chouteau Avenue have embraced concepts that may seem foreign to such a large-scale, urban construction project. Dusty parking lots will be replaced by lawn and tree-lined walkways. A vegetative roof will cover a two-story section of the building to reduce storm runoff. During construction, everything that can be recycled is being separated and placed in special bins for cardboard, wood - even gray plastic conduit. [Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch]

[Grants] National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: Five-Star Restoration Matching Grants Program

The Five-Star Restoration Matching Grants Program, administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, provides grants on a competitive basis to support community-based wetland, riparian, and coastal habitat restoration projects. Supported projects should build diverse partnerships and foster local natural resource stewardship through education, outreach and training activities. The stars in "Five-Star" are the partners, funders, and participants necessary to complete the project. Projects should involve diverse partnerships of ideally five organizations, including schools, universities, businesses, community groups, local governments, nonprofit organizations, foundations, etc. Applications must be postmarked by March 10, 2006.

[Grants] HP Technology for Teaching Grant Initiative

HP has launched its 2006 HP Technology for Teaching Grant Initiative, which will award grants totaling $8 million in cash and equipment to K-12 public schools and two- and four-year universities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. This grant initiative is designed to support K-16 educators who are using mobile technology in innovative ways, and to help identify K-12 schools and higher education institutions that HP might support with future grants. Based on the outcomes of the projects funded through this initiative in 2006, HP may offer grant recipients the opportunity to receive higher-value grants in 2007. Web-based applications are due by 5 p.m. PST, Wednesday, February 15, 2006.

[Grants] Young People Around the World Invited to Apply for Volvo Adventure Youth Environmental Award

Deadline: January 31, 2006

The Volvo Adventure International competition is an environmental award that rewards environmental action taken by young people. The program is intended to give young people the chance to gain international recognition for their local environmental projects and to help support environmental education in schools and the local community. Volvo Adventure is supported by the United Nations Environment Program (http://www.unep.org/).

The program is open to young people around the world between 10 and 16 years of age who working with schools and youth and community groups. Groups of young people who enter a project to Volvo Adventure are eligible to win an all expenses-paid trip to attend the Volvo Adventure Conference in Sweden, where they will present their project and practical action to a jury of international experts. Groups selected by the jury will be awarded prizes of $10,000, $6,000, or $4,000 to fund their projects.

Groups must be made up of between two and five young people and be represented by an adult. Projects previously entered for the award can be resubmitted provided they show significant and demonstrable progress. Projects will only be accepted by groups registered on the program's Web site.

[Grants] Udall Foundation Invites Applications for Environmental Public Policy and Conflict Resolution Dissertation Fellowship

Deadline: February 3, 2006

The Morris K. Udall Foundation annually awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates in the U.S. whose research concerns environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing their dissertation.

Dissertation fellowships are open to scholars in all fields of study whose dissertation topic has significant relevance to U.S. national environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution. Previous fellows' fields of study include political science; economics; government; environmental science, policy, and management; ecology; environmental justice; regional planning; geography; natural resource policy; and environmental analysis and design. Cross or inter-disciplinary projects are particularly welcome.

Each applicant must have completed all coursework and passed all preliminary exams; have approval for the dissertation research proposal by February 3, 2006; entering the final year of writing the dissertation; and be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or U.S. national. Ph.D. candidates who hold a fellowship for the purpose of writing the dissertation during the year preceding or coinciding with the Udall Fellowship are not eligible.

Fellowships are intended to cover both academic and living expenses from July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007.
