Palmerston North > Wellington > Picton (South Island)
The wind had dropped, the sun was shining and our drive to Wellington was in glorious sunshine through rolling hills and pasture land and then along the coast. This is when New Zealand really comes into its own with fantastic landscapes and few cars.

We arrived in Wellington just in time for lunch and had it at the Wellington Brewery Company just along the quay-side overlooking the harbour. This is the life: balmy weather, great atmosphere, good food and James behaving himself. Wellington definitely gets a thumbs up and has much more atmosphere than Auckland. We'll be stopping here on the way back.

After a leisurely stroll around town we headed back to the campervan and drove round to the ferry port. I (Catherine) had been dreading this bit with all the hassle of driving on & off the ship and the possibility of getting sea-sick but the trip went without a hitch. They even had a children's play area so James was kept entertained playing with the other kids for the journey.

We're now in Picton at the 'top' of the South Island, and it feels different (but don't know why), after a short drive off the boat to our latest Top 10 site.
