rss output 3BEIJING: China has angrily rejected peace overtures from Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, saying Beijing's stance was unchanged and warning that Mr Chen risked "great catastrophe" by pushing for independence. "Chen Shui-bian claimed that he intends to ease tensions and confrontation across the Taiwan Strait, but has obstinately stuck to his separatist stand of `one country on each side' of the Strait," said Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for the mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office. "If Chen Shui-bian remains bent on sticking to his splittist and Taiwan independence activities, he will never bring peace and prosperity to the Taiwan compatriots, but will only bring great catastrophe." rss output 2A SPLIT is emerging between Australia's primary and manufacturing industries over the prospect of a free trade agreement with China. The Australian Grains Council yesterday called on the Government to work towards the conclusion of an FTA with China by the middle of next year. Council president Keith Perrett said the Government should immediately grant China full market economy status, which is a pre-condition for negotiating an FTA. "The Howard Government has been given a mandate for its trade agenda and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade should now direct all available resources to completing the current Australia-China scoping study by the end of 2004," he said. The Grains Council approach contrasts with that of the Australian Industry Group, which has called on the Government to defer granting full market economy status to China until it is assured Australia's anti-dumping system is not compromised and costs and benefits to all sectors are assessed. AIG, which represents a broad swathe of manufacturing and service industries, is concerned that Australia would be restricted in the kind of anti-dumping action it could take against China once full market economy status was granted. It is concerned that Australian manufacturers are being undercut by unfairly priced Chinese competition. |
rss output testThe research assistant, Zhao Yan, was detained on Sept. 17 while in Shanghai on personal business. His family received formal notice on Sept. 21, from the Beijing State Security Bureau, that Mr. Zhao was "in criminal detention under suspicion of illegally providing state secrets to foreigners." "We are deeply, deeply concerned about the detention of Zhao Yan," said Susan Chira, foreign editor of The Times. "We are doing everything we can to assure his safety and we are helping his family get legal assistance." "We can state categorically that Mr. Zhao has not provided any state secrets to our newspaper," Ms. Chira said. Bill Keller, executive editor of The Times, has contacted the White House, the State Department and the Chinese government on Mr. Zhao's behalf. Some Beijing journalists have speculated that the detention is linked to an article in The Times on Sept. 7 reporting the unexpected news that the former Communist Party chairman, Jiang Zemin, planned to resign his last position of power, as chairman of the Central Military Commission. The article cited unnamed sources with ties to the leadership. |
