Here are the official MacHelp recommendations:
1. Get an iPod Mini if the recipient is young or athletic, or the 15 gig white iPod for an adult.
2. Add an AppleCare extended warrantee. iPods have a 90-day guarantee and if you bounce one off the pavement too hard the minimum service charge is - ready? - $250! That extra $50 or so for AppleCare may save a friendship.
3. Get a case. One way to prevent the above mentioned iPod bounce is to always keep it in a nice case with a belt clip. I've got one from 'incase' that's nice.
4. Pick up a car charger. The batteries now last a long time, but not as long as that audio book you ripped off a set of CDs from the library. Being able to grab a few extra volts from the rental car will be welcome.
5. While we're on about cars, those little FM transmitters that plug into the headphone jack will let you share your Podgoods with friends on the road or become the star of a party. This is a geek toy with legs.
Now, you don't have get all this at once, except the extended warrantee. Giving an iPod means you're covered for birthdays and other gift opportunities for a long time.
