Scott,
It was great to talk to you yesterday. I hope everything goes well with your blog.
At first you sounded like you were far away, deep down inside a plastic drum. There was no echo, on my end, which was great but it was very difficult to understand you. Once you switched the gear on your end the quality improved by 50%. It was still difficult to understand but it got better as I pushed the single head phone into my right ear and plugged my left to cancel out the back ground noise in the room. I was using my sons USB (free with some kill'em computer game) head set. I believe that, with a little tweaking, the system would work great for free long distance calling.
I intend to experiment more when we set up our DSL system in Dry Tortuga. [http://thefloridakeys.com/parks/jefferson.htm] It will be DSL on both ends so I hope the slower satellite speeds will work out for us. Our base camp at Dry Tortuga will be reliant on a self contained power and water system. There is no back up power grid and no cell phone coverage. The only alternative is the unreliable NPS radio phone or the expensive direct satellite phone that costs about $10 per minute. I hope to be able to avoid both. Any suggestions from other DSL or satellite people would be helpful.
Dale
