iPods Invade Redmond Adam Curry's blog for 2-2-05 points to this wonderful article at Wired:

Hide Your iPod, Here Comes Bill!

Microsoft's leafy corporate campus in Redmond, Washington, is beginning to look like the streets of New York, London and just about everywhere else: Wherever you go, white headphones dangle from peoples' ears.

To the growing frustration and annoyance of Microsoft's management, Apple Computer's iPod is wildly popular among Microsoft's workers.

"These guys are really quite scared," said the source of Microsoft's management. "It shows how their backs are against the wall.... Even though it's Microsoft, no one is interested in what we have to offer, even our own employees."

One manager "... stirred up considerable controversy claiming Apple is locking in consumers with proprietary file formats, despite Microsoft's long history of using the same tactic..." Well, the truth is out.

Another Microserf is quoted thus:
"I don't really care if it pisses them off," he said. "I'll argue why they're doing it wrong. If you want me to stop using it, give me a product that works and is as easy to use."

It's the Rapture!

Sharing Pictures & FileMaker Documents

One of my more adventurous clients recently had a few questions about sharing pictures and FileMaker documents

How do I save a pic in another format to send to Haleakala Times? They said they wanted 200api ( maybe they meant 200dpi? I can do that in elements... but how do I send it in another format... like .pdf instead of .jpeg?

You make a .pdf (Acrobat) document by Printing a file, but instead of choosing a physical printer such as your Epson, click on "Save as PDF" at the bottom of the print dialog window. Save this file to the desktop - add '.pdf' to the name - then attach it to an email. Every other picture format is available under the SAVE AS dialog in the program.
Next, How do I save a document in FileMaker Pro so that a PC user can get it? Or can they get it just as it is? I know in AppleWORKS (.cwk) I have to change it to MSWord (.doc) What about filemaker pro?
You can't send someone a FileMaker record, only an entire database, which they would then need FileMaker to use. If they have your version of FIleMaker you just send them the file, it's already compatible. You can also export any 'Found' set of records as a new FIleMaker database or in various Text formats that can be used in any data base program the recipients has. Check out 'Export Records' under the FILE menu. The most useful format is 'Tab-Separated Text'

You can also cut and paste all the text from a single FileMaker record into your email program by clicking anywhere on the space between the fields so that the entire record is highlighted. Then copy (Apple-C) and paste (Apple-V) it into the body of an email message.
