Hawaiian OS Hacks

Maika'i

Aloha Kakahiaka. I'm typing this on my 'lolouila lawelima' while browsing the Hawaiian puke wehewehe olelo. Or for you other haolies, I'm using my laptop to browse the online Hawaiian dictionary at ulukau.org. LINK

I discovered this last night at the Maui Apple User's Society (MAUS) meeting. LINK

For April the subject was actually emulators, specifically Microsoft's VirtualPC and the CherryOS. VirtualPC is the best way to run Windows: on a Mac. CherryOS is an interesting but flawed Mac OSX emulator for Windows that was written right here on Maui by someone who must not have had a day job.

Running Windows on a Mac is like putting a trailer hitch on a Porche. Emulating the Mac OS within Windows is like trying to stuff that car up your nose (ihu). Someone has to do it, but it's an exercise in futility. The Cherry PC is of course a great hack, but the benefit of running OSX - which is implemented on top of UNIX - under of a piece of chrome plated shit like Windows XP evades me. The result will always be a ponderous pile of kukae. Eventually, Apple's lawyers will realize that a serious copyright violation has taken place and an extended visit to Maui will be needed to investigate something from the vantage point of a beach chair or fishing boat.

Ultimately, another enterprising geek with too much time on its hands will build the inevitable redundancy: a Mac emulator for Linux. Then the lawyers will again arrive to snuff their effort, unless the programmer lives in Alaska.

Anyway - go check out ukulau.org, a great resource on the hawaiian language.

(I just looked up "lawyer" and the hawaiian word is "Loio". The joke here is that the word for "idiot" is "Lolo" - just a dot away. Those kanaks have such a sense of humor.)
