The NPR piece on No Child Left Behind got me thinking about the testing procedures. The Attorney General for Connecticut was interviewed about his states lawsuit. The point concerning testing and the disparity between white children and minority children were repeatedly referenced as the "reason" we need these tests. I don't believe that race or color is a merit based point of testing. Rather than focus on "white children" or "black children" we should be focusing on "children who's parents are educated" and "children whose parents take part in the education process (like homework, after school events, etc)" vs. children whose parents don't. Wouldn't this be a realistic, measurable factor? What would it take to wake up our legislator's and stop increasing the race divide and focus on what matters: family values, commitment to education, parents involvement with the children. Once we make that change we can accomplish some overall educational strides. |
