Bob and I went to the House of Blues last night to check out Porcupine Tree. We had dinner there before the show so we could get "pass the line" privelages. Dinner was really good and the service was worth the price.

The opening band was fabulous. They are called Marjorie Fair and they are an L.A. band. Their album Self Help Seranade just came out in July and I picked one up at the table. I spoke with the Bass player Mike and he is going to forward my request to podcast them to his management company (Zama). These guys put on a good show with some nice song transitions and interesting effects. They had some good dynamics and definitely fit the "radio head" style of band ... which I really liked.

Porcupine Tree was amazing. We met Greg and Svetlana (Armenian and Russian) who told us all about how much they love the band and how long they have been listening and going to shows. Svetlana was an incredibly drunk, tall, gorgeous blond full of energy. Greg was really into the show and didn't really want to be bothered by her. We cracked up all night ove this.

I definitely felt the Dream Theatre influence in the song arrangement and I wouldn't be surprised if the drummer studied from Portnoy. Porcupine tree is a really well polished band. Good song writing, good solo's, interesting sounds, and a LOT of people packed into the HOB. I would like a little more dynamic range though - they were pretty much either acoustic guitar or full onslaught. That's just my personal taste creeping in though.

Here are a couple of pictures from my RAZR - we were on the second floor so you get what you get...
