SAFIRE ON CHARACTER:  I wonder what brought this on?  I'm not a big fan of the NYT's Bill Safire, and this column meanders all over the place - but when an MSM talking head takes on a moral question, it's news.  Main point seems to be: 

 

For a person, a party and a nation, the element essential to success is character, a word that grew out of the Greek for "to mark, to engrave."

 

Which is only partly true:  character is at least as important in times of failure and suffering.  But I won't quibble.
