SAFIRE ON CHARACTER: I wonder what brought this on? I'm not a big fan of the NYT's Bill Safire, and this column meanders all over the place - but when an MSM talking head takes on a moral question, it's news. Main point seems to be:
For a person, a party and a nation, the element essential to success is character, a word that grew out of the Greek for "to mark, to engrave."
Which is only partly true: character is at least as important in times of failure and suffering. But I won't quibble.
