Utilities Weigh in on BPL. More interested in network control aspect. Despite cheery industry Astroturf and rampant optimism from outgoing FCC chief Powell, the actual people deploying broadband over power-line (BPL) technology still aren't sold.

Bell Canada Gets Naked. Are telcos awakening to unbundled reality?. Bell Canada has finally announced they'll stop forcing the purchase of local service and will begin offering a stand-alone DSL line, also known as "naked DSL". It's a move North American telcos are slowly being forced to embrace as users migrate.

Light Reading has the inside scoop on SBC's looming television services (dubbed U-Verse), taken from a presentation to the DSL Forum last week and a tour of SBC Labs (w/photos). Since SBC isn't doing fiber to the home, compression becomes important.

U.S. Asked to Probe Music-Download Sites  The Federal Trade Commission is being asked to investigate Web sites that claim to offer legal music downloads for a low price but actually sell popular software that is available free elsewhere on the Internet and is commonly used to steal songs.

Company Says It Can Put Satellite Radio on PDA, iPod, mp3 Player and Cell Phone. Calypso Wireless, Inc. says it's developed a technology that will allow users of mobile devices such as cellular phones, PDAs, satellite radios and portable music players, to listen to satellite broadcasts on those devices from either Satellite transmitters or wireless.

Family tracking clock.

At Techfest, Microsoft showed the teddy bear that keeps an eye on kids, but also the prototype of a digital wall clock that keeps track of each member of the family.

Instead of numbers, the hands point to places — work, school, home — and can track a person's location to show where he or she is at any time.

The idea requires the members of the family to have a mobile phone; microchips in the phones allow tracking by satellite to within a few metres.

The clock is not expected to be widely available for several years.
