The click wheel of my 60GB 4G iPod had become almost unusable - it would keep sticking and result in, at best, very jerky scrolling. By toggling the hold switch on and off, I was able to get the wheel working again but only for a few minutes.
I found the answer here. I inserted a thin piece of fairly stiff foil in the gap on the outside of the click wheel and run it all of the way round and then repeated for the gap on the inside of the wheel. I felt some resistance at a couple of spots and some gunge came out. The wheel now works perfectly - hopefully it will stay so.
