Ex-voto Paintings
The latin term ex-voto means 'from a vow' and these paintings were made in response to an answered prayer. They were promised to a saint or diety while a person was ill and were printed. Upon the person's recovery, as a way of offering thanks. On some of the paintings you will see the letter P.G.R. which stands for 'per grazia ricevuta' (for grace received') Most of them were made in the nineteenth centry and contain an image of the invoked saint or diety as well as a depiction of the illness or accient that occurred.
These vibrant vernacular image offer snapshots of real events, a sick child, a nose bleed, an attempted murder, or a tumbling flower pot.
