The Yorkshire Moors - Xmas 2005
Yorkshire is 3 hours train journey north of London. The city of York was the home of the Kings hundreds of years ago. Now we can buy pork pies from the famous Scotts Butcher, which was featured in Rick Stein's Christmas food special. Like most old English cities, there is an old and spectacular cathedral, the York Minster.
From the city of York, we took a bus for 1.2 hours to the village of Kirkbymoorside, where we took parts in lengthy and treacherous hikes around the moors and turnip fields; passing sheeps, cows and horses. We were in love with our new hiking boots.

Some serious snow in front of a church.

Very snowy for the new year

Xmas lunch - after Cracker

Xmas lunch - after Cracker. I forgot what my joke was, but the punch line was nervous wreck.

Nice Tree in the cold, after Xmas lunch.

Hiking - Day 1 - potatoe field
There were lots of holes along the footpaths. I was guessing they were signs of badgers roaming around for earthworms. Some soil heaps appeared to be freshly dug. Of course we don't know anything but it was very intriguing to see. I looked around in the ground hoping some badger would come up and greet me with a grin like in the cartoons
I checked my *Country Dairy* and it says that badgers spend most of the time underground in January. In February, the female badgers will give birth underground to their cubs.

Hiking - Day 1 - some serious mud on the shoes. The moors at the back.

Hiking - Day 2 - The cows

Hiking - Day 2 - Footprint on the snow. There were plenty of partridges flying about when startled. They jinked off the trees. There are times we could hear gun shots and people hunting the birds. The partridges don't fly very high and they make funny noise.

A monocular is employed to find the yellow arrows indicating the public footpath.

Turnip field almost frozen. The tracter made a graphic pattern on the ground.

Baked beans is a very good hiking snack.
