Show #102: Irony and Echoes
This episode finds me making an argument that irony is to thinking as echoes are to listening. Source material is from a recent trip to San Fransisco and some walks into the forest. Thanks to Rick from Belfast for the gentle nudge to get this one out for general consumption.

One hundred episodes of Islandpodcasting! This one begins and ends in the woods, with me thinking my way through some of life's big questions. No hurry here; this is simply me living life as it unfolds, with a bit of musical reflection added to enhance the mood.

Show #98: Between City and Woods
This episode moves back and forth between downtown soundseeing and the birds of my yard as I contrast the human and natural worlds. As usual, I marvel at the connections that life seems to yield, and I end with a life saving trip for stranded starfish in Vancouver.

Part one of this show finds me having done some serious thinking about life, it's meaning and purpose. The second part has me in the kitchen, cooking some serious BBQ. This episode is accompanied by an eclectic mix of songs, and appropriate titles, including Freaks Like Me, Meant to Be, Down in the Hole, and The Marionette.

Show #95: In Spirit
This first show of 2009 finds me reflecting on a number of things, including the nature of the creative spirit and its connection to my muse. This episode finds me moving back into podcasting with a deeper understanding of the role it plays in who I am in the world.
The show reprises some of the podsafe music I've played on earlier editions including music by Young Galaxy, Mini-system and The Finches. Future shows will feature new music from the usual sources.

Show #93: Back in the Land of the Maya
This show brings you some soundseeing from the Mayan Riviera in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. I was there for a weeks holiday and took my trusty iRiver along to do some recording. The resulting audio clips make up the bulk of this episode. The spoken word piece at the end of the show is by Shane Koyczan and is an example of his powerful performance word poetry that he does with his group Short Story Long.

Show #92: From Harvard
I am back after a long hiatus. This show includes some recording done while I was attending a recent leadership institute at Harvard University. It includes some reflections on a trip made to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Museum and Library, and my overall impressions of the city of Boston. The show finds me thinking about the progress that America has made since the Kennedy era as they prepare to elect Barack Obama as their president.
I am joined on this podcast by my colleague Jill Roberts who you'll hear midway through the show. The episode closes with me relating a random chance encounter with another storyteller, Brother Blue with whom we happened to share a taxi as we left Harvard. All in all, it was a remarkable trip, with lots of learning about many important things.

Show #91: The End of My TV
In my first show in almost a month, I'm back with some talk about getting rid of my TV and switching to an all audio and web-based source for rich media content. I talk about the weather, cook some dinner, reflect on a recent video podcast from Baba's Beach and expand on a conversation between two ex-nannies. I play a tune by Jill Sobule and another by Tom Waits.

Show #90: Get Up Stand Up
This show finds me reflecting on and giving thanks for two gifts that I received recently at work. The first segment ends with The Navaho Honouring Song. Part Two of the show comes to you from Tofino on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island where I talk about the awful but mostly unquestioned impact of Canada at war. I end with a double shot of music from The Black Angels from their seasonally appropriate album "Passover".

This show includes some thoughts inspired by the 13th century Sufi poet and mystic Rumi, as well as a short DIY segment with me making a batch of Australian Shiraz. I play a couple of tunes, one by Hayden, another by Young Galaxy. A leisurely Sunday podcast with a phone visit from Todd and an apple for Cheeky the deer.

Show #88: Musing about muses
I return to my roots in this piece, coming to you from deep in the woods, with some musing about exactly who is my muse, and what it means to have one. Cigars, songwriters and synchronicity are themes that run through this show. Spring is in the air, blue skies and warmer weather are on the horizon.

Show #86: Happy Holidays
Come along for some late night Christmas shopping soundseeing and a bit of philosophical rambling in the few days leading up to Christmas. Recorded just before Christmas day and edited and posted just after, this is Christmas 2007. The first musical piece in this show is "Some Things Go Without Saying" by the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the second piece is a Wailers classic from a now out of print London concert at the Lyceum. Merry Christmas everyone!

Only a few show notes for this episode, which begins with a celebration of the return of Chub Creek to the podosphere. I play some music by The Frames, and talk my way through some Saturday kitchen work, including smoking some nuts and making a pot roast. Winter fare for the soul......

Show #83: Halloween: It's scarier in the real world.
Recorded on and around Halloween night, this show features music by the Victoria based Outlaw Social with two songs from their new album "Dry Bones". Thanks to Pharis and the rest of Outlaw Social for permission to use the songs in this podcast! I also talk about the wonderful Irish movie Once that I saw in flight from Toronto. "Once" is one of the best films I've seen in a long long time.
There's also a bit about the need to fight against the extradition of the BC3 for their "crime" of selling pot seeds to those in the US via the web. The show ends with "Yell Fire" by Michael Franti and Spearhead from their recent album on the ANTI - Epitaph Label. It's available as a free download from the link above.

Show #82: Marketing death: Podcasting, misogynist videos and Canada's "new" drug policies.
An electic show that ranges over a number of topics, with the only real connection being a focus on death. Not that I'm trying to be morbid, thats's simply how this one turned out. Music is appropriately by The Black Angels and Beirut's newest offering from the IODA Promonet.

Show #81: The Watch
A shorter show this week about that strange state of mind between wakefulness and sleep that's called "The Watch". Music played in this episode includes a piece by Robert Rich from the Magnatunes site and a piece by the IO Music Project. Also included is the Charles Bukowski poem "Nirvana" as read by Tom Waits. If you like Wait's particular form of magic, buy his latest album "Orphans". It's an amazing collection of some of his rawest and rarest work to date.

Show #80: In the Land of the Maya: Part 2
Part two of the Mexican soundseeing podcast series focuses on our trip to two Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula. First we visit Tulum on the coast, and then move inland to the village and ruins at Coba. I climb the big pyramid at Coba, which is the second tallest in the Mayan empire. It was big, tall and a scary climb with no handrails. There was only a rope laying on the steps to hang onto as you went down. I kept thinking about that scene in Apocalypto where the heads and bodies bounce down the steps to the bottom...
 |
If you look carefully at the top of the pyramid you can see two people sitting there. Neither of them is me, though I did go to the very top and into the chamber. The jungle has reclaimed most of this site, with only several hundred of more than 6500 buildings excavated since its "discovery" in the 1970's. At one time, Coba was home to 50,000 Mayans. |
The ending tune in this podcast is by Brad Sucks from the Magnatunes website. The title of the song is "Time to take out the garbage". It has no particular connection to the podcast content, but I liked the jazz noir feel it has. Somehow it matches my mood and mindset as I descended down the big pyramid.

Show #74: Lessons from Kona
I'm back after a long absence with a set of recollections about what I have learned from living my life with my little dog Kona. After nearly 13 years with him we had to put him down on June 2 due to an aggressive brain tumour. Without a doubt, this has been one of the saddest weeks I have ever experienced. The episode is mostly me talking, keeping it together for the most part, with a final song dedicated to Kona, called "Open Heart Surgery" by the BJM.

Show #72: Climate Change Dracula: Art at the Edge of Science
I muse about some of the media and art I've consumed over the last couple of weeks including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's version of Dracula, Heather O'Neill's Lullabies for Little Criminals and the movie version of the PD James novel Children of Men. This is the first podcast that I've done with the NexxGen Mic that was recommended by the Zedcaster and the Scarborough Dude so I'll be interested to hear any feedback about a difference in the audio quality of the show. I end the show with a few hints about the topic of my presentation at the upcoming Podcasters Across Borders conference in Kingston Ontario in June.
Some of the music in this podcast is from the IODA Promonet courtesy of the Southern Culture on the Skids, which you can download below. The other bits of music are the Brian Jonestown Massacre's "A New Low in Getting High" and Joe Strummer and the Mescalero's "Coma Girl". I thought Coma Girl was a good tune for the recently emerged Hippies vs Punks debate in that Joe so perfectly marries what is vibrant about both movements, along with a bit of crossover into the music and culture of Rastafari.
