From Capitol Hill Blue The Rant Bush's Increasing Mental Lapses and Temper Tantrums Worry White House Aides By DOUG THOMPSON Nov 2, 2005, 05:26

An uncivil war rages inside the walls of the West Wing of the White House, a bitter, acrimonious war driven by a failed agenda, destroyed credibility, dwindling public support and a President who lapses into Alzheimer-like periods of incoherent babbling.

On one side are the dwindling numbers of die-hard loyalists to President George W. Bush, those who support his actions and decisions without question and remain committed to both Bush and scandal-scarred political advisor Karl Rove.

On the other side are the increasing numbers of those who say Rove must go and who worry about the President's declining mental state and his ability to restore credibility with Congress, our foreign allies and the American people.

The war erupted into full-blown shout fests at Camp David this past weekend where decorum broke down in staff meetings and longtime aides threatened to quit unless Rove goes. Insiders say Chief of Staff Andrew Card now leads the anti-Rove legions and has told Bush that he wants out of the high-pressure job.

White House staff members say the White House is [base "]like a wartime bunker[per thou] where shell-shocked aides hide from those who disagree with their actions and office pools speculate on how long certain senior aides will last.

Bush, whose obscenity-laced temper tantrums increase with each new setback and scandal, abruptly ended one Camp David meeting by telling everyone in the room to [base "]go fuck yourselves[per thou] before he stalked out of the room.

Senior aides describe Bush as increasingly [base "]edgy[per thou] or [base "]nervous[per thou] or [base "]unfocused.[per thou] They say the President goes from apparent coherent thought one moment to aimless rambles about political enemies and those who are [base "]out to get me.[per thou]

[base "]It[base ']s worse than the days when Ronald Reagan[base ']s Alzheimer[base ']s began setting in,[per thou] one longtime GOP operative told me privately this week. [base "]You don[base ']t know if he[base ']s going to be coherent from one moment to the next. What scares me is if he lapses into one of those fogs during a public appearance.[per thou]

Aides say Bush, who has always had trouble focusing during times of stress, is increasingly distant during meetings, often staring off into space during discussions on the nation[base ']s security and other issues.

Card has responded to the crisis by cutting back on the number of staff members with direct access to the President and jumping in to answer questions when Bush[base ']s mind wanders.

[base "]Some people say Karl Rove is [OE]Bush[base ']s brain,[base '][per thou] says one increasingly-concerned West Winger. [base "]Well Andy has become the President[base ']s voice. He[base ']s there to speak when the President seems unable to find form an answer.[per thou]

Bush[base ']s mental state is a hot topic on Internet blogs and has increased since this web site disclosed last year that the White House physician had placed the President on anti-depressant medication [^] a story the administration never denied. Others, including prominent psychiatrists like Dr. Justin Frank of George Washington University, wonder if Bush, an admitted heavy drinker who claims he quit without any professional help, is hitting the bottle again.

An increasing number of mainstream media outlets, including Newsweek, The Washington Post and the New York Daily News recently confirmed our earlier reports about Bush[base ']s temper tantrums.

[base "]Bush usually reserves his celebrated temper for senior aides because he knows they can take it,[per thou] the Daily News reported. [base "]Lately, however, some junior staffers also have faced the boss[base ']s wrath.[per thou]

[base "]This is not some manager at McDonald[base ']s chewing out the help," a source with close ties to the White House told the paper. [base "]This is the president of the United States, and it[base ']s not a pleasant sight.[per thou]

Bush loyalists claim the President can survive his current spate of political troubles and emerge stronger than ever but an increasing number of White House aides express increasing doubt. Some even go so far as to speculate if the President[base ']s deteriorating mental condition can survive another three years in office.

[base "]The President has lost his focus, his ability to govern and the trust of the American people,[per thou] says one longtime GOP operative. [base "]Those are things that are difficult to recapture when you[base ']re on top of your game and this President has taken one too many blows to the head.[per thou]

“Another shocking accusation”.

by Lawrence Wilkerson: On NPR yesterday, the former chief of staff to the secretary of state said that he had uncovered a ‘visible audit trail’ tracing the practice of prisoner abuse by U.S. soldiers directly back to Vice President Cheney's office.

Alan Dershowitz: Scooter Libby Prediction.

So here's my prediction about how the Scooter Libby case will go down. His two new lawyers (both of whom are tough, experienced and first rate) will demand every bit of classified information arguably relevant to his defense. The independent prosecutor will seek to turn the material over, because he knows that unless they are turned over, the judge may well dismiss the charges. But the intelligence agencies will veto the independent prosecutor's decision, claiming that disclosure of the requested classified material would endanger national security.

The question will then be posed quite starkly: who makes the final decision about whether to disclose such material? Does the independent prosecutor have final authority? Or do the intelligence branches have final authority? If the latter, will they be beholden to the White House? If so, will the White House use its power to try to get the charges against Libby dismissed by refusing the prosecutor's request to turn over the classified material, even if it is not really confidential?

This is only one possible scenario, but it is a highly plausible one. It is important, therefore, for the decision to be made now as to how much power the independent prosecutor has. If he does not have the authority to disclose classified material, then he is a Potemkin prosecutor, not an independent one. Stay tuned.

Bush: Rove Investigation Is Not Over and Remains Serious.

press

Moments ago at a press conference with President Bush:

QUESTION: Are there discussions in the White House about whether or not Karl Rove will remain in his job?

BUSH: Elizabeth, the investigation on Karl as you know is not complete and therefore I will not comment on him and/or the investigation. I understand the anxiety and angst by the press corps to talk about this. On the other hand, It’s a serious investigation, and we take it seriously.

Someone tell Bill Kristol.

New York Post Compares Robert Greenwald to Nazi Propagandist.

Filmmaker Robert Greenwald is releasing a documentary that is critical of Wal-Mart. According to Robert Murdoch’s New York Post, that makes him no better than Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister in Nazi Germany:

Instead of a response from the retailer, “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price” (which is receiving a vanity booking in theaters before hitting DVD on Nov. 14) edits in promotional footage of Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott in a way that holds him up to ridicule - a low-blow technique that would bring a smile to Joseph Goebbels.

If you want to see the film and make up your own mind, check out the official website.
