The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

This book is filled with drama. Just when you think you have digested the latest downtrodden circumstance, you are engulfed into another twist of truths, betrayals, biasness, and sadness. The first few chapters begin with the story of a well-to-do Afghan boy and his father and their servants, with whom they try to balance friendship and societal barriers of “everyones’ place”.

A tragic act of violence upon one of the story’s characters spins the story into avenues of deceit, apathy, and sheer selfishness. The historical fiction story is based in Afghanistan and the timeline extends from pre-Russian invasion to present day Taliban. The main characters are taken from a life of luxury and privledge to a life on the run, with ultimate immigration to the United States. It is there that Amir, the main character, must live in constant anguish over an act of callousness he committed upon his friend/servant Hassan in Afghanistan. This is especially difficult for him to live with, as Hassan dutifully remained loyal to Amir until the very end.

This is a great read and will capture your thoughts throughout the day. I found myself wanting to finish it as soon as possible to reach the happy ending. The ending was disappointing, only in that, it makes you realize decisions you make in your life can have a profound impact on, not only your future, but also on those you love…
