Book Review: The Golden Compass

My husband and I read this book to our kids when it first came out. We were all mesmerized by the world created by Philip Pullman. The Golden Compass tells the story of Lyra, a young girl who finds a golden compass with strange symbols on it, which she finds she can interpret. Lyra lives in a parallel world to our own, one in which every person has a daemon. The daemon takes the form of an animal and is always in close proximity to their person. Lyra's daemon can take the form of almost any animal, but when Lyra becomes an adult she and her daemon, Pan, will choose which animal he will be. Lyra's interpretation of the compass leads her to discover evil in her world, and find allies to fight it. It is one of the best fantasy books written in recent years, and is hitting the big screen this weekend.
