Just when it appeared that Retief Goosen might look human at a U.S. Open, the silent South African turned super man. Rebounding impressively from a double-bogey on No. 14, Goosen closed with three late birdies to shoot 69 and open a three-shot lead over two of the unlikeliest of challengers, journeymen Jason Gore (left) and Olin Browne. Tiger Woods, meanwhile, didn't make a putt but still found himself within striking distance at 3-over par.
