Macintosh ramblings and commentary

It's always funny to hear people complaining that Apple doesn't put all the features in the lesser models. Listen that's why they are lesser models. MacBook Pro sells for more money it has more features, if both did the same thing most people would buy the cheaper unit. I know I would and I'm not talking about the size of the screen. I know that I will most likely want to use a new computer to play some hi end graphics so the 64 Meg Intel cards that come with the MacBook will not be my pick. I also want more hard drive room so the card slot that the Pro has in it is perfect for expansion due to the fact it leaves my FireWire port open for my digital movie camera to do movies. These are only a couple things that people should look at when choosing a new portable Mac. For Most people the 13 MacBook $1299.00 is going to be all the machine they will ever need. It's faster than my PowerBook 12 has a DVD drive a bigger screen and can hold 2 gigs of RAM.

Memory sticks have dropped in price to the point that you can afford to buy a 1 Gig for under $60.00. I was so impressed I purchased 2. This way I have updates and installers at hand with out having to carry a bunch of CD's. The only confusing thing about memory sticks is what to ask for. Some people call them thumb drives, keychain drives, USB flash drives and jump drives. The fact that they hold a lot of data in a small format and use USB ports is all you really need to know. So if your writing that next great American novel you can indeed take it with you. Please note most of these devices come formatted fat32 so you need to format them to Macintosh unless you want to share data with a PC friend. If that is the case you need to make sure none of your data is from a OS 9 or Classic application Other wise yo will damage the resource forks and lose your data.

Owning a Domain name is the only way to make sure that where ever you move you can keep your same address. If you're a company that does business on the Internet having a domain is also very important. Having a spammer spoof your address on their spam can get your domain name blocked by lots of businesses and Internet providers. Spoofing happens when a spammer puts your address in his e-mail as the return address. Whats really nasty is there isn't a whole bunch you can do about it and by the time you know about it a lot of damage to your reputation has happened.

DiskWarrior still has a conflict with QuickTime 7.0.4. Even though Apple has made several updates to QT they have not fix a problem that causes DiskWarrior to crash on step 10. Even though the rebuild is complete you must restart DiskWarrior 3.0.3 before rebuilding another volume. Alsoft says your data is not harmed and that they will have a work around in a future version of DiskWarrior. Now I like DiskWarrior it's one of my favorite tools but giving us a loose statement like that is a little lame.

Apple seems to have a battery problem with at least the MacBook Pro. Several reports of the battery expanding have been documented on the web. This seems to happen when the battery is in charge mode so keep you eyes and mind open to this possible problem. If it does happen unplug the charger and shut down the MacBook Pro. I recommend that you take pictures before having it replaced and be sure to let an Apple store handle the battery removing and replacement. Why take it to a store? Well if you pry the battery out it may look like the damage was done you on purpose.
