Trivium, the official site of [base "]The knowledge Trees[per thou]).

Ivan Illich

Many students, especially those who are poor, intuitively know what the schools do for them. They school them to confuse process and substance. Once these become blurred, a new logic is assumed: the more treatment there is, the better are the results; or, escalation leads to success. The pupil is thereby "schooled" to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. His imagination is "schooled" to accept service in place of value. Medical treatment is mistaken for health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for productive work. Health, learning, dignity, independence, and creative endeavour are defined as little more than the performance of the institutions which claim to serve these ends, and their improvement is made to depend on allocating more resources to the management of hospitals, schools, and other agencies in question.

Ivan Illich Deschooling Society

Schooling - the production of knowledge, the marketing of knowledge, which is what the school amounts to, draws society into the trap of thinking that knowledge is hygienic, pure, respectable, deodorized, produced by human heads and amassed in stock..... [B]y making school compulsory, [people] are schooled to believe that the self-taught individual is to be discriminated against; that learning and the growth of cognitive capacity, require a process of consumption of services presented in an industrial, a planned, a professional form;... that learning is a thing rather than an activity. A thing that can be amassed and measured, the possession of which is a measure of the productivity of the individual within the society. That is, of his social value.

A radical alternative to a schooled society requires not only new formal mechanisms for the formal acquisition of skills and their educational use. A deschooled society implies a new approach to incidental or informal education.... [W]e must find more ways to learn and teach: the educational qualities of all institutions must increase again.

History
?Foula was built as a gas powered major light (range > 15 miles) in 1986. It was never a manned station as it was built during the automation programme as an automatic light. The decision to establish a light on Foula was as a direct result of the increase in oil tanker traffic using the west coast route. Other lights established at this time were Point of Fethaland, Yell Sound and North Rona.

The conversion from acetylene gas to the highly cost effective solar/wind electric operation will mean lower maintenance, an environmentally friendly system which will also provide a higher level of reliability.

Work commenced in Summer 1999 with the laying of the concrete plinth for the construction of a new GRP (glass reinforced plastic) building which contains the control room and battery room.

The original 4th order lens has been retained having been suitably modified to accommodate 35 watt metal halide lamps in a 3 position changer. The rotation of the lens is by a gearless drive and control is by Programmable Logic Controllers and associated switch gear. The monitoring of the light to the Board's headquarters in Edinburgh is by PSTN.

The power system now consist of 36 solar modules charging 2500 AH, 24 volt battery, this is supplemented by four small vertical axis wind generators.

All works associated with the solarisation of Foula lighthouse should be complete by 31 March 2000.

Shetland General Building Contractor James J Johnson of Bixter carried out all concrete works and erected the solar panel framework. Jimmy Johnson has carried out work for the Northern Lighthouse Board since 1967 and was also involved in the works associated with Fair Isle South Lighthouse - Scotland's last manned Lighthouse automated 31 March 1998. Orkney electrical contractors R S Merriman carried out the electrical installation.

INTRODUCTION

P3107 External Wind Generator

Mounting Kit âo[base "] Common Items

Testing a wind generator in free wind has a

number of advantages and disadvantages.
The advantages are that blockage effects are minimal,

and results are determined across a

representative range of wind fluctuations.
The disadvantages are that the wind fluctuates so that it is difficult to obtain repeatable results,
and the wind will not provide a suitable range of variability over a typical laboratory session.

Whilst Cussons P3100 Horizontal Axis and P3120 Vertical Axis Wind Generators are designed for use within a wind channel such as Cussons P3105 they can also be used externally on the appropriate external mounting frame.

The frame consists of

P3107 Common mounting frame kit and either P3108 Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine kit or P3125 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Kit NOTE These products are for use in winds up to 16m/s velocity and are not to be used in higher wind speeds.

DESCRIPTION P3107 Common Frame Kit

The P3107 Common external mounting frame

kit comprises of a large tripod base, which is

designed to be tilted into the vertical from a

downwind position. The base is supplied with

âo[ogonek]pocketsâo? that can be weighted at site with soil,

rocks or water to provide a secure base in

stronger winds.

Once raised to the vertical position the frame has

an additional telescopic section that allows the

wind turbine to be raised further from the

ground. The upper end of the telescopic section

incorporates a horizontal guard frame designed

to reduce the risk that a student comes into

contact with the rotor.

The frame includes a mounting location for the

control panel supplied with either the Cussons

P3100 Horizontal Axis or the P3120 Vertical

Axis Wind Generators. Note: These control

TECHNOLOGY

panels are not waterproof, and whilst low

voltages means that there is not an inherent

danger if the boxes become flooded, the

equipment could be damaged, and it is not

recommended that the equipment be used in

rainy conditions, and particularly not when there

is a risk of lightening.

Warning: It is not recommended to use the

external frame in winds that are gusting above

16m/s. Technical Specification P3107

Common Items

The Common Items for the P3107 External

Wind Generator Mounting Kit shall comprise of

a robust tripod base, with pivoting feet, allowing

the tripod to be raised to the vertical.
The base is to be provided with pockets in which weights can be placed to help weigh down the tripod.

The base is to include a telescopic section and to

have a mounting point for a Cussons control

panel. The frame is to include a horizontal guard to help prevent unintentional access to the wind generator.

The Kit is to interface correctly with both Cussons P3108 Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine kit and Cussons P3125 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Kit (although not both together). P3108 Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Special Mounting Kit

Cussons P3100 Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine

can be mounted externally to carry out tests in

free wind conditions.
It is essential that P3108 is used with the P3107 common items kit.

P3108 comprises of a robust frame, together with a light bearing and wind vane, to maintain the P3100 Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine pointing directly into the wind. It is possible to lock the turbine into a set angle relative to the wind. The kit also contains an electrical extension lead to extend the connections and extension cables for the measurement of torque and thrust in the mechanical P3100 version. (Mechanical measurement of thrust and torque externally is not accurate).

P3125 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Special Mounting Kit

Cussons P3120 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine can

be mounted externally to carry out tests in free wind conditions. It is essential that P3125 is used with the P3107 common items kit. P3125 comprises of a robust frame to mount the P3120 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine and to provide upper and lower bearings in which the rotor can turn. The kit also contains an electrical extension lead to extend the connections and extension cables for the measurement of torque in the mechanical P3120 version. (Mechanical measurement of torque externally is not accurate).

Hydrogen is found on or near the earth's surface only as a constituent of other chemical compounds, notably water and hydrocarbons. Hydrogen can be released from these other compounds, but it always requires energy to do so - more than can ever be recovered by using the released hydrogen as a fuel. Thus, for all practical thermodynamic purposes, hydrogen is an energy storage medium, not a source of energy. From an environmental or energy security point of view, producing hydrogen for use as a fuel (as in a car) is only worthwhile if the energy used to make the hydrogen comes from renewable sources (solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, etc.), or if the engine running on hydrogen is efficient enough to at least make up for the energy used in producing the hydrogen. Otherwise, it is more economic and less polluting to just burn the hydrocarbon in the first place.

Gutenberg, Johannes (c1400-1468), German printer and pioneer in the use of movable type, sometimes identified as the first European to print with hand-set type cast in molds. Detailed records of Gutenberg's life and work are scant; his name does not appear on any of the works attributed to him. He was born around the year 1400, perhaps as early as 1394, probably in Mainz, and trained as a goldsmith. His family later settled in Strasbourg. In 1438 Gutenberg entered into a partnership with Andreas Dritzehn to conduct experiments in printing. Returning to Mainz in about 1450, Gutenberg formed another partnership, with the German merchant and moneylender Johannes Fust, and set up a press on which he probably started printing the large Latin Bible associated with his name, as well as some smaller books and leaflets. The Bible, known variously as the Gutenberg Bible, Mazarin Bible, or 42-Line Bible, was apparently finished before the end of 1456. German printer Peter Schöffer, Fust's son-in-law and Gutenberg's apprentice, may have helped to print the work. Johannes Gutenberg originated the technique of printing from movable type. Gutenberg used hand-set type cast in molds to print multiple copies of manuscripts. Whereas scribes copied manuscripts by hand before Gutenberg[base ']s invention, copying became mechanized and much faster after the invention. The invention of movable-type printing facilitated an easier exchange of ideas throughout Europe and helped spread the ideas of the Renaissance.

CARL GUSTAV JUNG, TIPI PSICOLOGICI

Bateson all[base ']epoca sessantottenne.

In 1992, EMI Chile included an alternate version on its Todo Víctor Jara release, and every subsequent EMI Chile release has contained only the alternate version. All of the reissues of Víctor Jara (Odeon; commonly reissued as Desde Lonquén hasta siempre) are now out of print, leaving this version unavailable. 2.13 MB

Concept mapping, mind mapping, tree diagrams, organisation charts, spider diagrams are all terms used to describe graphical organisation methods. These are used for storing, processing, organising and presenting information graphically. A number of software packages are available which help draw these diagrams and output them in various forms. But what do these terms mean? Why are these mapping techniques useful? Who uses them and why are they so popular?

A concept map is a diagram where each "node" contains an idea, concept or question which are linked together by branches to show their relationship to each other. A concept map does not always have to take the form of a web - they can be presented as a tree diagram or organisational chart, as an input or output tree or as a flow chart. Mind mapping is a distinct technique from concept mapping. Mind maps take a particular, prearranged web form. They were developed from psychological theories by Tony Buzan in the 1970s. Combining keywords, images and colour, this highly structured method of concept mapping has become popular with all ages for note taking, brainstorming and creative thinking. Other types of concept maps have been developed for particular uses: tree diagrams for structured hierarchical diagrams such as organisational charts, input and output trees for showing processes.

However, it is really up to you which layout you choose [~] choose the one which you feel best suits your style. You may prefer a structured or unstructured layout. The subject of the map may dictate that you use output trees for process maps or tree diagrams for a hierarchy.

Why are concept mapping techniques so useful? Concept maps are particularly useful for dyslexic children, students and adults because:
Many dyslexic users prefer to work in a visual and non-linear environment where they can see the whole picture. Ideas don't have to formed into sentences immediately [~] keywords, image and colour can be used to get ideas down on paper. Maps can be developed to suit the individual's preferred learning or thinking style to make the best of their strengths. Structuring a linear piece of work can be very difficult for a dyslexic writer. Ideas and concepts in a map can be easily rearranged without having to worry about sentence structure or grammar. In fact, a recent review of research papers identified more than 20 studies linking the use of concept maps with higher student performance. These included improvements in:
vocabulary
writing
reading comprehension
note taking
critical thinking
higher order thinking
retention and recall of information
problem solving
comprehension and retention of scientific material and concepts
learning a foreign language
Brainstorming [~] an individual or group can brainstorm to generate ideas.
Start with a problem or topic. Note ideas, concepts, keywords, processes or images relating to it.
These form the "nodes" of the map.
You then add further ideas, branches, to start building up the diagram.
This can also introduce hierarchy into your map as some ideas will be a subset of others or can be grouped together.
With concept mapping software, you brainstorm directly into the computer.
Many of these packages have a brainstorming mode which automatically creates a new branch as you type each idea. You can then easily move, link and group ideas as you wish. The resulting concept map could form the basis of an essay or project, it could produce the solution to your problem, or you can save it for later reference.

Visual display of information [~] another great advantage of concept maps is that they present information visually. Many dyslexic people prefer to think visually. Seeing information pictorially can help you to create ideas, and also to remember information. Use images instead of words; use features such as colour, size and position to signify topics, importance and actions to take. Use concept maps to present large amounts of information which you can absorb more quickly and more easily than a long stream of text.
Outlining [~] use concept mapping software to outline documents, presentations or projects. The programs automatically convert the graphical map view into a text outline of the map. Attach text, references or hyperlinks to ideas in your map as "notes". In some programs the notes entry boxes have basic word processing functions, letting you add lists and tables. This means you can go from a brainstorming session to a draft outline in one application. Developing a draft version of a document in a visual environment can be much more productive for a dyslexic user as they can easily see the whole structure of the document at one glance [~] making it easier to construct a complete framework or to rearrange individual sections without having to redraft the whole document.
Revising and structuring knowledge [~] concept maps are a great way to look at and store a large amount of information. By using keywords on branches you can quickly get an overview of a subject. Images and colour can trigger ideas, categories or subjects. Add links pointing to files, references or web sites for further information.
raditionally, concept maps were created on paper with coloured pens. However this method provides particular problems for dyslexic users [~] poor spelling and handwriting can make a map difficult to read while organising the map to fit on to the limited size of the paper can also be difficult. Also, when a concept map is drawn on paper, once completed it can only be used as a reference. Ideas can not be re-arranged or expanded on nor can the information be changed into a different format such as text version of a map or presentation slides.

With a concept mapping computer program you are not limited to a certain size. Moreover you have access to additional tools such as images and pictures, spell checkers and text-to-speech which can help overcome difficulties and make the map much more usable and presentable. Most concept mapping applications also have import and export functions; information can be converted between a visual map (which the creator may prefer to work on) to a linear, text based format for communication to others. Alternatively teachers and support workers may prefer to create text-based outlines but have them automatically converted to a concept map which their students may prefer.

For example, you could import a text file of notes, then expand and sort your notes to form the map. Add images and colour to help create a visual adaptation of your notes. Export the map outline back into a word processor to expand it into a full document or export it to a presentation program to create a slide show. You can even create a web site from your map by saving it as an HTML file. If you are planning a project or wanted a visual "to-do" list then you can import tasks from Outlook and then develop a project.
