Smarter Teens Have Less Sex. Tech.Luver writes "Gene Expression reports, "Tyler Cowen quotes from a new study testing the relationship between grades and delayed sexual activity. Last December I passed a paper along to Razib showing that high-school age adolescents with higher IQs and extremely low IQs were less likely to have had first intercourse than those with average to below average intelligence. (i.e. for males with IQs under 70, 63.3% were still virgins, for those with IQs between 70-90 only 50.2% were virgin, 58.6% were virgins with IQs between 90-110, and 70.3% with IQs over 110 were virgins) In fact, a more detailed study from 2000 is devoted strictly to this topic, and finds the same thing: Smart Teens Don't Have Sex (or Kiss Much Either). New Record For Solar Cell Power Efficiency. mdsolar writes "Renewable Energy Access is reporting that a consortium led by researchers at the University of Delaware has achieved 42.8% efficiency with a silicon solar cell. The method uses lower concentration (factor of 20 magnification) than the previous record holder (40.7% efficiency) so that it may have a broader range of applications, since tolerances for pointing the device will be larger. They are now partnering with DuPont to build engineering and manufacturing prototypes. They expect to be in production in 2010. On a roof, such cells would require less than half the surface area to produce the same amount of power as today's standard solar panels, which have an efficiency of about 17%."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Supercomputer On the Cheap. jbrodkin writes "You don't need Ivy League-type cash to get a supercomputer anymore. Organizations with limited financial resources are snatching up IBM supercomputers now that Big Blue has lowered the price of Blue Gene/L. Alabama-Birmingham and other universities that previously couldn't afford such advanced technology are using supercomputers to cure diseases at the protein level and to solve equally challenging problems. IBM dropped the price of the Blue Gene/L to $800K late last year before releasing a more powerful model, Blue Gene/P, last month. Sales of Blue Gene/L have more than doubled since then, bringing supercomputing into more corners of the academic and research worlds."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

ComScore on Social Network Growth. Yesterday, comScore released some new numbers on social network site growth over the past year. The numbers are interesting, yet expected. Comparing unique visitors from June of 2006 and 2007, Facebook shows tremendous growth, along with significant movement for Bebo and Tagged. Myspace and others continue to grow at a remarkable pace, but the story of the stats is Facebook. Of course, comparison at a one-year interval can be somewhat misleading, especially in the fast-moving world of SNS, so to have these broken down quarterly would have been a lot more interesting.

In fact, the most interesting statistic comScore produced was a breakdown of SNS visitors by geographic region. While there isn't anything too surprising - Facebook is huge in the US, Bebo large in Europe, and Orkut dominates Latin America - I was interested to see Tagged's fairly even distribution among a number of geographic areas.
