STAR India Adds MyIris.com, Zoom, The Sun And NatGeo To PLUS.

I don't know how STAR India's mobile application PLUS is doing, but they're certainly getting more content on board - Indiantelevision reports that STAR has tied up with UKs The Sun for lifestyle content, financial portal MyIris.com, Times Group TV entertainment channel Zoom TV (for news, animations, wallpapers and program guide), and National Geographic Channel for "animal ring tones". STAR had launched PLUS earlier this year with the goal of becoming the de-facto mobile application for access to content, trying to play down the STAR association, in the hope that they would get third party content on board. That hasn't quite happened since rival ZEE has launched its own mobile offerings. In that context, STAR has finally managed to get third party content on board, with its association with National Geographic and Zoom. Question is: has STAR got this content because they have the users, or because NatGeo or Zoom have no plans for their own application? STAR has advertised its application extensively, across TV. There's nothing on whether the deals are exclusive, but I would be surprised if they were: exclusive content is far too expensive.

New York Times - nytimesriver.com for mobile devices
Oh man!. A picture named bigfly.gifThe NY Times has a piece today where they say the mobile web is so close yet so far.

"The user experience has been a disaster," says Tony Davis, managing partner of Brightspark, a Toronto venture capital firm that has invested in two mobile Web companies.

The NY Times has totally ignored the NY Times River, which makes the Times work on mobile devices with ease of use that they so often report is eluding them.

It's like a fly perched on the end of your nose. You can feel it but it won't come into focus. Please, Times people, I beg you -- use it. You'll fall in love. I promise.

Sarkozy's digital agenda.

Zdnet reports on a new initiative in France to tighten copyright protection over the Internet and prevent illegal downloading. The French president himself gave announcements that makes one think he's on payroll of the music and film industry ("we run the risk of witnessing a genuine destruction of culture...")

ANOTHER OF GOD'S LITTLE TOYS William Burroughs, in the early 1960s, called the audio tape recorder "God's little toy", enthusiastically incorporating it into his "cut-up" methodology.

As far as I know, WSB never much took to personal computing, but playing with this, yesterday morning, I was reminded of his having remarked that a heroin addict can find simply staring at his own shoe sufficient entertainment for a good three or four hours.
