The world's first fleet ballistic missile submarine is shown sliding into the Thames River from her building ways at General Dynamics Corporation's Electric Boat Division, Groton, Connecticut. George Washington (SSBN598) is capable of firing the Polaris 1,500 mile ballistic missile from submerged positions at sea. Washington incorporates latest technical advances in nuclear power and inertial navigation, with a shark-shaped hull design.
