Fortnight to go

There's less than a fortnight to go until Davos - I mean New York. I've been in touch with a lot of the people I look forward to seeing each year, and our conversations are tinged with regret for what we'll be missing, as well as hopefulness at what we will encounter in Manhattan.

Part of what I'll miss is familiarity. Already, trying to fix up places to meet people, I'm on new ground. If it were Davos, I'd happily say, "Let's meet in the member's lounge after the first plenary." I'd guess there will be a member's lounge at the Waldorf, but will it be a place to meet? I don't know.

Friends needed

Donald Rumsfeld did the US little good with its European friends earlier this week when, asked about the prisoners being held at Camp X-Ray, he said he had "not the slightest interest" in the conditions under which they are being held.

Philip Stephens has an excellent analysis of why the US needs to show more consideration for allies who bridle at such talk. "Doing the right thing will help, not hinder, the fight against terrorism. In such a conflict the moral case reinforces the efficacy of military action. Values and pragmatism march in lockstep."

What's in a name?

A year ago, many observers (including myself) mocked the newly named Accenture. After a bitter dispute, the consultancy had severed itself from Arthur Andersen, and had to come up with a new name.

As Andersen gets into deeper and deeper water over its role in the Enron debacle, its name is diminishing in value by the day. Having spent 88 years burnishing the lustre of the name, it's extraordinary how rapidly it can fade.

What odds on a high-priced naming consultant being called in to refashion Andersen yet again?
