This recalls my first experience with Radio 7.1

Date January 10, 2001 12:55:00 PM

Just started report part 1

Greetings all,

Just joining the list with my experience of installing the Radio 7.1b45 to upgrade Radio 7.0.

My system is Mac OS 9.1 on Mac G3 firewire laptop, with 576MB RAM and 10GB drive. I'm connected to the net via Verizon DSL. My browser of choice is IE 5.1.

Before the install I went online and had started IE running. The installer finished in less than 2 min. and I started Radio. New items were installed from Userland and I checked the menus.

My first action was "view in browser". Then "do scan now" and again "view in browser". I posted a news item, then edited it, then published it. It showed up as I expected in my local webpage.

When I clicked on the globe that shows the HTML rendering of the blog I discovered that it has not updated with the new published items. In fact it seem to have stopped updating with the last story on June 12, 2001.

I next wanted to see any new themes. After selecting a different theme and clicking submit, I reviewed my local webpage, refreshed the browser and no change. When I checked the templates they had no changes either. I poked at this several times with no sucess.

When I had to leave for a meeting I found that Radio would not quit. Neither keyboard or menu worked. It looks like a force quit is my last choice. I will leave it running until I return from my meeting in 1 hr.

Regards

Gary

Just started report part 2

After returning from my meeting Radio was force quit (ctrl-opt-cmd-esc). The conformation window asked if I really wanted to quit "Verizon DSL"? I did so and Verizon DSL quit leaving Radio still running. Radio still would not respond to a quit request so I did another force quit. This time Radio did respond and force quit. After a restart, getting back online, I launched Radio and did a "view in browser" then tried to click File-Quit and keyboard cmd-Q, neither worked. Nor does File-New or File-Open. That's a show stopper for me. I'm willing to send Userland my Verizon SW for examination if needed.

Back to Themes; after closer examination the templates DO change when I submit a new Theme, but the local web site continues to show the old Theme.

Regards,

Gary

Just started report part 3

It's not clear that Verizon DSL is the cause of my problems. To simplify things I restarted with the Base Mac OS 9.1 extension set. As this set does not enable the DSL I did not go online. I started Radio and waited for it to finish trying to connect. The File menu continues to be unresponsive. So again a force quit and a reboot. On the next restart I went online and downloaded the new 8.0 Radio app. Decompressed and installed it. Again the same unresponsive File menu.

My thinking turned toward major component elimination, operating systems and hardware platforms. So I grabbed a Mac 7600 that is not connected to the net running a well worn copy of Mac OS 9.1 and did a fresh install of Radio 7.1b45. A smooth install and the File menu works fine. I created a new opml document, saved it, opened it, and closed it. When I chose quit Radio quit as expected. About 5 minutes later I 2x clicked on Radio to launch it and the computer locked up. The only way out was a force restart. This behavior was unrepeatable.

Here's something interesting after the Radio root file on the G3 laptop was moved to the 7600 the File menu on the 7600 behaved exactly as the G3 laptop.

More digging to do.

Ciao,

Gary

Just started report part 4

This is my last report because I decided to do a fresh install of Radio 7.1b45. The upgrade path did not work for me. I have everything backed up securely so that's covered. Time for a fresh start.

Five minutes on the dot from when I ran the installer to when I could post to my new Radio 7.1 web site. Spent the next hour testing features and exploring. I'm thoroughly impressed! Weblogs have just turned a technology corner. This ain't no smoke and mirrors, if you write for the web you're gonna love it.

BTW I am very pleased to report the file menu now works as expected.

Ciao,

Gary

PS I'm agreeable to trying the upgrade to 7.1 over again.

OK! 5 minutes on the dot to get to my first blog entry.

The upgrade from Radio 7.0 to 7.1 did not go smooth. I think there is a problem with my original root database. So this is a fresh start.

Ciao
