The world's oldest example of abstract art, dating back more than 70,000 years, has been found in a cave in South Africa.
The author describes how some researchers think this find is nothing because they have no others like it. I ask since when is that a criterion for art? Art is in the eye of the beholder, right?
I wrote about prehistoric art and creativity some time ago on iSee iSay where I conjured a scenario about why creativity exists so again let's try to put this find into the context of it's original time. The author does a good job describing the place. My perspective is the people were living together in small family tribes of hunter gatherers. As such they used tools to assist their day to day existence and human territorial nature being what it is certain tools, things, or spaces were marked uniquely so as to identify their belonging to an individual or tribe. Need it be any more complicated than that? I don't think so. Is home decorating art? Is landscaping art? Does this answer the question, is it art? That's up to you.
