ERGH!
Don't let anyone kid you. Setting up a new computer is a royal pain in the rumpus. I had bought components to build a new computer on my own and that went well enough (with one thing I'm still working out). But getting all of the software up and running and transferred over is a big-league hassle.
I've installed Windows XP Professional four times so far, with a clean install on a newly deleted and reformatted partition on three of them. The fourth was an attempt at correcting a problem that had come up by reinstalling Windows to repair the problem, but that didn't work, so the fourth wipe it clean and reinstall followed.
What has been the biggest hassle, though, has been the networking. I'm keeping my old PC, at least for the moment, and have networked it to the new one. The new system has two LAN adaptors built in to the motherboard. One connects to the Internet through my wireless boradband connection and the other connects to the second computer in the LAN. So the old system should be able to access the Internet through the first one, but I've not been able to make that work. I can access both systems on the LAN, but I can only get at the Internet on the first.
That's not that big of a deal, except for when I've not had things up and fully running.
The other part of networking hassle has been in configuring Radio and my firewall so that Radio can post. For a while, the firewall was blocking Radio, even though I had set it up the same on the new computer as I had on the old one. Now, after a bit of tweaking, it appears to be working okay.
So my list of software yet to install has dwindled a bit and the new system is usable. I've not been posting much here, both because of building the new system and not having it ready for use yet and because of getting adjusted with the new baby. She's a real sweetheart, to be sure. I surely do not understand how a person so small can have such a big impact in our lives! <g>
