BBC NEWS | Politics | Charles' school comments defended

BBC NEWS | Politics | Charles' school comments defended: "the best they can and suggesting that all of them could get A" (Via BBC.)

Far be it from me to care what the hell someone who is "Royalty" thinks, but let's have some sense here. Charles' comments seemed quite in line. Mind, you he does seem a bit "out of touch". Let's check out his comments:

The Prince responded (to a complaint from a staffer) with a handwritten note saying: "What is wrong with everybody nowadays?

"What is it that makes everyone seem to think they are qualified to do things far beyond their technical capabilities?"

He goes on to blame the "learning culture in schools" and a "child-centred system which admits no failure" and tells people they can achieve greatness without "putting in the necessary effort or having the natural abilities".

I will say that this does make the Prince seem out of touch, as this has been going on for a looong time.

All the effort and learning and practice in the world will not allow me to become a fighter pilot. I have 20/200 vision in one eye, and worse still, I'm 6'4". I literally almost cannot fit into a modern fighter (I've been). If I had to eject, I would lose my legs (no joke).

People have been having this sense of "entitlement" for a long time, though. It's not a class thing. It's just a human element of growing up.

Want to be a great guitarist? Start practicing. Get discouraged because after 3 weeks you still can't play songs from sheet music? Keep practicing. You may not become a Great Guitarist, but you can always be better than you are. That is intelligent. Complaining that I'm not as good as (insert name of Guitarist here)? Sod off. Have you practiced as much, are you as talented? Keep trying.

Please understand that I speak as someone home-schooling his child using a student-centered form of study. Note: not "Child centered", there's a difference. The key thing is this sentence:

"putting in the necessary effort or having the natural abilities."

If you think you can(or should) get anywhere in an area of endeavor without one of those two items, you really should stop reading my Blog. :)

Guthrie offers set that couldn't be beat

Guthrie offers set that couldn't be beat: "Forty years ago, Arlo Guthrie cut his teeth in little coffeehouses like Club Passim...So it's not surprising that he seemed so utterly ..."(Via Boston Globe -- Living / Arts News.)

Y'know, maybe I'm missing the RSS feed I should be reading, but I'm really getting tired of reading about events/happening that have already happened in the Boston Globe.
