Taking time.

I have almost gotten used to the intermittent and /or slow internet access while travelling. There are dozens of internet cafes that can accomodate laptops and I have been uploading pics to flickr. I have also been trying to keep up with work by downloading mail and uploading docs. The experience has been frustrating; I will often see ping times of close to 2400 ms rendering MS-Entourage (with Exchange) almost useless.

I find myself watching my Flickr uploads speed past the quirks of Entourage. Entourage prioritizes the tasks in a very strange way: instead of simply sending out the mail in my outbox, Entourage will download some mail (good), send a message (good), synchronize my contacts (bad), send another message (good), update server errors (bad). I spent an hour trying to send out a powerpoint with no luck.

At times like this I realize how much I rely on the always on and fast connections to the net and how much of my software seems to have taken a step backwards from good old modem days. This is probably a sure sign that I should take a step back myself and start enjoying myself!

And it is probably the wrong time to mention that I just found a new website download utility to help me survive those moments when I am not connected to the web. Site Sucker promises to let me download my favourite sites and review them when offline.
