Emerging Practices associated with Learning Technologies

The 11th Sloan-C Asynchronous Learning Network conference is in Orlando, FL this year. The attendees are a good mix of Faculty, Admins, Instructional Technologists and Vendors and there is a strong focus on Distance Learning.

I am doing a three hour workshop on Emerging Practices and Learning Technologies (in higher education). It is a topic that I have been immersed in over the last year or so and I have managed to find a very good support network in both the ELI and the Horizon Project Virtual Community of Practice.

A three hour workshop seems like a long one, but the topic could easily fill three days. This usually means that very important topics get reduced to a corner of a slide and the discussion is curtailed just as it gets interesting.

My key themes for the presentation are:

  • self expression (including blogging & podcasting)
  • organizing and finding information (including tagging)
  • "always on" connection to the institution (enabling mobile learning)

RSS is sprinkled throughout my presentation and is the glue used to tie the emerging pieces to our existing campus infrastructure. Tagging seems to be the wild card concept but thankfully Ruben has crafted a good activity to demonstrate the power of tagging and emerging folksonomies <--this link is worth deliciousing. You can find Ruben's excellent discussion of tagging and good practices here.
