Airport bookstores score again: picked The Creation of the Modern World: The Untold Story of the British Enlightenment by Roy Porter on my last trip. Still reading it, but the first 264 pages have paid off handsomely. Especially taken by the account of the first attempts at empirical theories of mind and society, mechanism, quantification, and the development of print culture. Pretty close to us. Beautifully written, much to ponder and follow up.
