I've given up pretty much on radio except for the occasional segment of NPR news or Fresh Air. But discovering the archived webcasts of Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight at WFUV is reminding me of what radio can be. My first experience of great radio was the late night Em Órbita show in Portugal in the early 70s, which subtly, sometimes dangerously, opened a crack in a door that had been closed shut for decades by the Salazar-Caetano dictatorship. The show later became famous for playing the song that served as a signal for the troops who overthrew the dictatorship in April 25, 1974. Who says that radio doesn't matter? 4:45:13 PM ![]() |
